Snapshot: Deer in my backyard

One of the things that I enjoy a great deal about living in the suburbs, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, is the easy access to nature and wildlife. Last week, while I was sipping my morning coffee and flipping through the weekend edition of the Washington Post, I glanced at our backyard and low and behold there were deer, four of them, right outside my dining room.

They just wandered around, nibbled on some of our trees, and chilled for a while until they decided it was time to move on. Such beautiful animals, I tell you! This is a scene that is really worth my daily commute back and forth to work. Long live the suburbs!

Dear MM Blog,

I am working on a story about Iraqi refugees here in Damascus. One of the peripheral people in my story was a driver/translator for Jill Carroll.

So...Im wondering if you could send her my email or somehow put me in touch with her? I'd like to see if she would be willing to say a few words about her friend, Alan. There are such warm memories of him circulating here in Sham and I'm wondering if perhaps Jill could help me understand a bit more about him. My story is about one of the CD shops in Baghad that had a friendly/collegial relationship with Alan's.

Many thanks, Theo Padnos

Amazing, isn't it? I grew up in Upstate NY, where it was not uncommon to see squirrels, rabbits, and even the occasional deer (not to mention smelling the occasional skunk - ugh!). Give me the suburbs any day!

Have faith in Obama!!!! He is the new JFK-with him in office, at least some of the extreme conservatism gripping the US may erode slightly! Thank you Dan!!
